What is the NuvaRing?
The NuvaRing is a plastic vaginal contraceptive ring. It is marketed as an easy-to-use birth control alternative which delivers a lower estrogen level than birth control pills or the patch.
The NuvaRing is inserted directly into the vagina once a month, where it delivers a dose of progestin and estrogen over the course of 3 weeks before it is removed and the user goes on a one week hiatus.
What are the problems?
The NuvaRing may be linked to an increased risk of blood clots and serious cardiovascular problems in users. These side effects may be fatal. NuvaRing lawsuits have already been filed, claiming the manufacturer hid the risks of the product from unwary consumers.
The label warns that, “The hormones in NuvaRing® may cause changes in your blood clotting system which may allow your blood to clot more easily. If blood clots form in your legs, they can travel to the lungs and cause a sudden blockage of a vessel carrying blood to the lungs. The risk of getting blood clots may be greater with the type of progestin in NuvaRing® than with some other progestins in certain low-dose birth control pills.”
How long has the NuvaRing been on the market?
The NuvaRing has been available in the U.S. since late 2001.
