When a medication isn’t properly tested, or when its manufacturer hides potential side effects and complications, people who take the medication are at risk of suffering drug injuries. Drug injuries are different from side effects in that they are often more severe and unpublicized, either because the manufacturer wasn’t aware of them (but should have been), or because the manufacturer failed to disclose them.
Drug injuries can be severely damaging and even potentially fatal. There are many different types of drug injuries, but suffering any of the following symptoms may indicate that you or a loved one is experiencing one:
- Severe pain—One of the most common drug injuries involves organ damage. This may drug injury isn’t always noticed until the damage becomes moderate to severe, at which point you may experience severe pain in or near the affected organ.
- Heart attack or stroke—Certain drugs are linked to cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke. If you experience either of these with no previous risk factors, it may be due to a drug injury.
- Bleeding—Some medications are linked to an increased risk of bleeding, even from minor scrapes and cuts. If you notice you’re bleeding more than usual, or that your wounds take longer to heal, it could be a sign of a drug injury.
It’s important to call your doctor right away if you suspect a drug injury. However, you should never stop taking a medication without consulting your doctor first, even if you believe it may have caused a drug injury.
