Health Day reported that liquid forms of medications may have left premature babies exposed to drug injuries.
Agents called excipients are responsible for the potential drug injuries. Excipients aid in administration, absorption, and preservation of the medications that are commonly given to premature babies.
The U.K. study found that over 20 excipients were found in treatments given to premature babies in a neonatal intensive care unit. These agents such as ethanol and propylene glycol could cause drug injuries such as nerve damage.
Texas preemies who have been exposed to excipients could also suffer drug injuries.
